Conversations concerning public expressions and involvement of the evangelical community.

We are in need of a greater gospel than is currently being realized. The gospel we need must take into account, not simply the full range of individual sins in need of addressing, but the full range of the culture in which we live and the sin which it promulgates. The gospel Jesus preached did not limit itself to the many expressions of individual sin which are ever present but also to the national and religious consciousness of the age. In the institutions of society he saw the seeds of evil, from the nationalistic fervor of the Jews to the corruption of its religious symbols. Individuals were caught up in these institutional evils; but the greater responsibility of the ills of his society lay in the underlying assumptions that countered his own understanding and experience of God. "You travel far wide to make converts and then make them twice as much the son of hell as yourselves." Our society is no different, and our converts, while receiving the narrowly presented gospel of individual salvation, remain enslaved to the demon of cultural interpretation which denies their true freedom from the gods of nationalistic enterprise and materialistic gain. More to come.
